The grand finale of a year of jazz celebrations
– Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra perform in Helsinki

Nine-time Grammy Award-winning trumpeter and Pulitzer Prize recipient Wynton Marsalis arrives in Finland in December together with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO). The Helsinki concert will take place at Finlandia Hall on December 3.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra visits Finland as part of a wider Nordic and Baltic tour. The 15-member ensemble is one of the world’s most acclaimed jazz orchestras, with a repertoire ranging from early jazz classics to newly commissioned works. The concert will also feature music from the orchestra’s Big Band Holidays programme, bringing a seasonal touch to the evening. The tour includes two vocalists, Catherine Russell and Georgia Heers.

Wynton Marsalis (b. 1961) is one of the most important jazz musicians of our time. He is an internationally renowned trumpeter, composer, and bandleader, and has served for decades as the artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Marsalis has released over 100 recordings and has received nine Grammy Awards. His work Blood on the Fields is the first jazz composition to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music. He remains the only artist to have won Grammy Awards in both jazz and classical categories in the same year.

The JLCO has been the resident orchestra of Jazz at Lincoln Center since 1988. The ensemble consists of leading jazz musicians and performs regularly around the world. In addition to its concert activities, the orchestra plays a central role in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s extensive education and outreach work. The organisation is dedicated to advancing the understanding of jazz, preserving its heritage, and promoting its role in contemporary cultural life.

The Helsinki concert is part of the 40th anniversary celebrations of the April Jazz Festival. The visit also connects to the centenary of jazz in Finland, as jazz was first introduced to the country in 1926.

The visit is further highlighted by the fact that Marsalis has announced he will step down from his leadership role at Jazz at Lincoln Center after nearly four decades.

This is a rare opportunity to experience one of the world’s leading jazz orchestras in Finland. Tickets are available via Lippu.fi.
