Dhafer Youssef
”Shiraz”
Wed 22 April at 6 pm Tapiola Hall
The master of oriental mysticism and oud virtuoso Dhafer Youssef performs for the first time in the Helsinki metropolitan area!
Born in Tunisia, Youssef is one of the most distinctive and acclaimed musical voices of our time. He has created a unique style where the Sufi musical tradition and Arabic tonalities blend seamlessly with jazz, chamber music, and even electronic soundscapes. His deep, resonant voice and extraordinary oud playing have captivated audiences around the world.
Youssef has previously performed in Finland twice – both times in Tampere (2016 and 2017) – making this concert at Tapiola Hall his long-awaited debut in the capital region.
His latest album, Shiraz (ACT, 2024), is the most personal work of his career, dedicated to his wife, filmmaker Shiraz Fradi. The music radiates love and gratitude, but also reflects longing, fragility, and light. Across nine compositions – “films for the ears,” as Youssef describes them – he tells a story of life’s cycles, acceptance, and the enduring power of love.
Joining Youssef on stage are leading talents of the young European jazz generation: pianist Daniel García, trumpeter Mario Rom, bassist Swaéli Mbappé, and drummer Tao Ehrlich. Their interplay is intimate and nuanced, timeless yet vividly contemporary. Daniel García enchanted the April Jazz audience with his trio in 2024, while Swaéli Mbappé continues a family legacy – his father, Etienne Mbappé, performed at Louhisali in 2016.
Dhafer Youssef builds a soulful bridge between Arabic tradition and modern jazz.
At Tapiola Hall, we will witness a concert where sound becomes prayer – and even silence sings.
